Betrayal
Legacy of the Force
Aaron Allston and this creative team gave this book a great title. Betrayal has multi-layered meaning for this book. It can reference so many characters and plotlines. Is it talking about Corellia’s turn against the Galactic Alliance or the Galactic Alliance’s turn on Correllia? Is it referencing Han Solo’s turn on the Galactic Alliance? Is it referencing Thracken Sal-Solo’s turn on Corellia? Is it referencing Jacen’s turn on Nelani and/or Ben Skywalker? I think the answer is YES. So many of these story lines can be viewed as betrayals from different perspectives, and some look like betrayals on both side, so this is a great title for this book and my favorite aspect of this story.
The basic plot for this tale is that Corellia is trying to get all the benefits of being a member of the Galactic Alliance without paying taxes. The fun starts when people start choosing sides: freedom of choice for Corellia or Corellia should abide by its agreement with the Galactic Alliance, and some characters choose an unexpected path.
My biggest frustration with this story and the first couple of books in this series is that there is too much 9-11 and War on Terror correlations. When do you use a preemptive strike? What can the big government expect from the little one? How much freedom does the little government have? Throw in weapons of mass destruction and you have yourself a regular War on Terror allegory. That I didn’t like so much. The correlations were too one for one for my taste.
But there were some aspects of this book I loved. First, I really like Lumiya. This was my first introduction to her, and how she wove herself into the story to get close to Jacen was beautiful, and I enjoyed her sneakiness.
Second, can I just say I love Wedge Antillies. An, attempt is made to bring him out of retirement and how Wedge handles it is classic smooth Wedge Antillies.
Third, I loves Leah’s support of Han. In so many books, Han just sits back while Leah discusses what should be done with other politicians and other Jedi, and then Han charges in blasters blazing trying to accomplish the decisions made by Leah. It was a wonderful change to see Han make a decision for a plan of action, and Leah supporting him all the way. Even when others question her and Han, she does not back down or waver…she supports Han completely. This was a very cool change of the norm.
And this brings me to my other complaint of this book, Han makes the wrong choice! Now, I have completed this series and I know how it ends, but only with the information present in this novel, Han chooses the side that is in the wrong. Slight spoiler infomation in the rest of this paragraph. Corellia is clearly breaking the law, and Han chooses the law breaker. I know he is a rogue and a scoundral, and that he is proud Corellian still wearing his Blood Stripe, but they are breaking their word. I find it hard that Han and Leah would support them as easily as they do.
Another strong aspect of this book is the action. Action on Centerpoint station, Corellia, Coruscant, Asteroids, and more. Aaron Allston writes a good action scene.
The final aspect of this book that I liked was the presence of difficult decisions and a lot a gray area. The Jedi, Luke, Han, Omas, Jacen, Wedge, Leah, Ben, and others all have to make big decisions with little information. I know I bang on the fact that Han sides with the side that is breaking the law, but I do have to say that Han only had a small amount of information. I found it interesting that so many difficult decisions were made with little clear information.
Here is a little clearer breakdown of these tough decisions. It contains spoiler information, so be warned.
The biggest being Jacen’s decision to explore the path of the Sith. He just believes Lumiya and what she says about the future and Vergere, and this all conflicts what Jacen has learned from Luke. And Jacen decides with conflicting information. Jacen also deals exclusively in absolutes. He tells Nelani you do not know what is at stake and that she will ruin the future. Jacen sees a clear absolute path to the future, which is very different that the future that is in constant motion as taught by Yoda and Luke…this shows the root of Jacen’s sithness even before he turns. I did find it a little odd that Jacen allows Lumiya to have such inflience over him after he has spent so much time becoming his own person in his five year quest and the Dark Nest Trilogy, but the use of absolutes was a subtle way by Allston to show the beggining of Jacen’s turn, which if you forget Obi-Wan’s statement on the Sith and absolutes you might miss this subtleness.
The Jedi choose to kidnap a legally established leader of a system of planets and initiate a preemtive strike against a target that has not attacked anyone which damages there ability to defend themselves. When do Jedi kidnap and attack first…I love these kind of questions. They make for good reading.
If you do not mind War on Terror correlations, you will enjoy this quick paced story, and that is your Star Wars book report.
