StarWars.com just announced that Electronic Arts has locked up a multiyear licensing agreement with Lucasfilm and Disney Interactive to be the exclusive developer of Star Wars titles for the main gaming markets: console, PC, tablet & mobile. While not stating exactly how long the license will last, EA (which includes Bioware, producer of the popular [...]

Details soon, full story here.

Highlights:

  • Star Wars Episode VII targeted for 2015.
  • More feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
  • George Lucas: “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”
  • The transaction value is .05 billion.

My early thoughts: I’m scared, but excited. This is a big deal. My daughter will have Star Wars films of her own to grow up with, should she enjoy them.  On the other hand, anything new has the potential to ruin a legacy.

On the other, other hand, this will turn Star Wars in to something akin to a true franchise without an author. Free from Lucas, it may be free to be something different.

And finally, while I’ll miss the 20th Century Fox fanfare, I look forward to Cinderella’s castle and when you wish upon a star to introduce the next Star Wars film.

More thoughts and news soon. It’s like 1977, and 1997, all over again.

After all, LucasFilm Animation “is also focusing efforts on feature film animation and other [...]

George Lucas has been talking about going off and making smaller movies for years now, but we’ve seen little concrete evidence to make up his statements. But earlier this week, he told Empire: “I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to [...]

Rick McCallum talked to IGN about – what else – the live-action series. He reiterates the cost and technical issues with doing the series, saying, “They’re so complicated. Each hour has more visual effects, digital animation, than any of the films we’ve done.” He also clarifies his previous comments on ‘underworld,‘ saying that while the [...]

Lucasfilm had one of those up and down days in the UK courts.  They lost their appeal of a prior rejection in the UK courts against Andrew Ainsworth and his stormtrooper helmet replicas.  In short, the stormtrooper helmets were considered to be utilitarian and not artistic (since they were used as a costume for a movie), [...]

With Tron: Legacy opening wide today, we thought we’d share a little-known Lucasfilm connection to one of the film’s characters recently revealed by director Joseph Kosinski in a visit to LFL’s Presidio headquarters. Rinzler, a character introduced early on as one of the film’s chief villains, was apparently named after Lucasfilm Executive Editor J.W. Rinzler, [...]
